What are Genesis 1-2 about, and NOT about?

What Genesis 1-2 are about, and what they are not about?

Today, the two opening chapters of the Bible are often used for refuting evolution or atheism, or advocating environmentalism. Yet these two concepts did not exist in the ancient world. We know for sure these were not what the author had in mind while writing the narratives.

We also know civilizations in the Ancient Near East had produced other creation stories of other gods as well. Genesis was not the only creation account we have. When comparing these ancient creation stories, we can see ancient civilizations were neither concerned with the Deism-vs-Atheism debate, nor the Creationism-vs-Evolution debate. Their major concern was which god was truly in charge with the most authority, and which god was the most worthy of their worship. These two questions are indeed still as relevant today as they were in the beginning of human civilizations.
